The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on Earth, up to 18 metres long, weighing 30 tonnes, and gentle as a cloud. They cruise the world's tropical oceans filtering plankton and tiny fish through their enormous mouths, and they've become the symbol of safe, respectful encounters between humans and ocean megafauna, particularly at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, where they aggregate seasonally.
